B+E Car and Trailer Familiarisation Courses

Our B+E training courses are perfect for anyone looking to gain confidence towing caravans, trailers, or similar loads. From practical reversing and uncoupling to safety checks we’ve got everything you need to tow with confidence.

Recommended Requirements

For Category B (car) drivers wishing to tow a trailer, the law has now changed.

Trailer Towing Training Course

From 20th September 2021, the government removed the need to pass a specific test to tow a trailer or caravan. If you hold a standard Category B car licence, you can now tow trailers and caravans up to 3500kg.

That said, the DVSA strongly recommends undertaking towing training to ensure safety, especially for businesses. Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), training is essential when operating work equipment.

Insurance companies also value formal training, often reflecting this in lower premiums and better terms for those who have completed a course.

What’s Covered in This Course?

We offer half or whole day courses and we can host it at our training centre or at your location — using either your car and trailer or ours.

Whether you’re completely new to towing or just brushing up, this course will help you develop the skills needed to tow a trailer safely. You’ll learn how to manage the combined weight of your vehicle and trailer, and we’ll go over the legal requirements for towing.

You’ll also gain knowledge of essential safety checks and how trailer type and weight affect handling and performance. We’ll make sure you’re comfortable with the weight limits and the dynamics between your vehicle and the trailer.

By the end of the course, you’ll understand safe methods for coupling and uncoupling a trailer and how to avoid common mistakes that can lead to accidents. We’ll also cover the key requirements for safely driving a vehicle and trailer.
